Mount Kimbie

The pioneering London duo bring a fuzzed-out new suite of electronica-tinged post-punk.

Mount Kimbie are in full band mode. They’re pushing the gain and hooking up the pedal-trains to realise their shipwrecked new sound at the Forum. The duo first set themselves apart in the late-noughties dubstep scene by leaving the club and listening in. ‘William’ from their breakthrough EP was cut together from field recordings of a skateboarder rolling across the pavement. From then on, they’ve intuitively balanced hooks with abstraction. Whether experimenting with ambient and garage or collaborating with Travis Scott and James Blake, they know how to crack a track open and let the interesting textures bleed through.

For their latest, The Sunset Violent, Dominic Maker and Kai Campos have dusted off their guitars and plugged back into the post-punk electronica they explored on Love What Survives. Only this time they’ve somehow managed to crank the fuzz while polishing the sheen and deepening the groove. It’s music that revels in the details with a vagabond pulse and a dead-eyed stare.
